HUGHES TURNER PROJECT

Live In Tokyo

***** (5 Star Review)

Joe Lynn Turner, one-time Rainbow vocalist, and Glenn Hughes, one-time Deep Purple bassist fall together effortlessly, take the golden moments of both of their talents and, with the meticulous help of three superb Japanese musicians, reinvents the whole scenario in the rock-loving East.

The fact that such a dubious band ideology actually does work is a sensational achievement in itself. Slap this unlikely album in your deck, lie back...and slices of Purple and Rainbow soon start hurtling towards you.

Devil's Road, You Can't Stop Rock'n'Roll, Stormbringer and Spotlight Kid in particular are delivered with a confidence that, frankly, often evades the original touring line-ups.

That's not to say that Hughes Turner Project in any way compare favourably with the moments they so faithfully emulate. Nevertheless, what shines through here, apart from clinical Japanese artistery, is a genuine joy of performing live. What's more, despite the ages of the two main men, this just record simmers with unlikely vibrancy.
